Our supportive care and education both before and after orthopedic surgery helps to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Before surgery, our pain management clinic provides non-surgical relief of pain related to orthopedic conditions as a first line of treatment when appropriate and until surgery becomes necessary.
Once surgery is scheduled, our unique Joint Academy for patients undergoing total joint replacement provides all the information required for a smooth experience and fast, full recovery, including: hands-on look at the replacement implant; exercises to do prior to surgery that will help to speed healing after; what to expect on the day of surgery; and what to do and expect during the recovery period.
After surgery, our rehabilitation and in-home care providers will help you to heal. Our inpatient physical therapy team will get you off to a great start in the healing process, with minimal pain. Our outpatient physical therapists will work with you to continue and complete your rehabilitation once you’re out of the hospital. Orthopedic Surgery Services at Day Kimball Hospital:

Arthroscopic Knee and Shoulder Surgery
Arthroscopic surgery involves making a small incision near the damaged joint and inserting an arthroscope to see inside. An arthroscope is like a tiny telescope with a light and video camera. While viewing the area magnified on a monitor, the surgeon is able to identify and repair the damaged area. This is usually a one-day surgery.

ACL Reconstruction
The ACL, or Anterior Cruciate Ligament, is one of four main ligaments in the knee. ACL reconstruction is performed when the ACL has suffered a major or complete tear. During the surgery, a graft is used to replace the ACL. The procedure is often done arthroscopically (using a tiny telescope with a light and video camera), but may also be done as a traditional open surgery. It may be done under either regional or general anesthesia. Arthroscopic ACL surgery is usually a one-day surgery, requiring no overnight stay in the hospital. The recovery time after ACL surgery is significant, however, ranging from four to six months, and requires rehabilitative therapy.

Bunionectomy
A bunion is an abnormal bony bump that develops at the base of a toe where it joins the foot. Bunions can be extremely painful. A bunionectomy involves making an incision at the top or side of the toe and removing that portion of the metatarsal head that is affected. (Metatarsals are the five long bones that run the length of the foot, attaching to the phalanx, or toe bones, at their heads.) The procedure is usually done with a local anesthetic; a sedative may also be given. It is a one-day surgery performed through ourACU.

Carpal Tunnel Surgery
The carpal tunnel is a small space in your wrist through which your median nerve and several tendons run, from your arm to your hand. When the carpal tunnel is made smaller due to swelling or other injury, this can result in carpal tunnel syndrome, which is pain, tingling and other problems in your hand. When the damage is severe or the condition has not responded to non-surgical treatments, surgery may be performed to reduce the pressure in the median nerve and relieve symptoms. During the surgery, the ligament that forms the top of the carpal tunnel is cut to provide more space for the median nerve. This can be done by traditional open surgery, or with endoscopic surgery, which involves making a smaller incision and working with an endoscope (a thin, flexible, lighted viewing instrument) to view the surgical site and make the repairs. This is a one-day procedure performed through our ACU.

We offer a variety of treatment options for those suffering from back or neck pain, including pain management and physical therapy. But when non-surgical approaches don’t alleviate your pain and surgery becomes necessary, you can rest assured that we provide the highest possible level of care. Spine surgery is performed to treat a wide variety of conditions affecting the back and neck, such as bulging discs, degenerative and arthritic conditions of the spine, fractures, narrowing of the spinal canal (spinal stenosis), abnormal growths (tumors) and infection (abscess). Total Shoulder Replacement
Shoulder replacement surgery involves replacing the ends of the humerus (upper arm bone) and the scapula (shoulder bone) with an artificial surface lined with metal or plastic and metal. This is done under general anesthesia and requires an inpatient hospital stay. As with our hip and knee replacement surgeries, our team of orthopedic surgeons, nurses and physical therapists will continue to work with you during your post-surgical recovery to ensure the best possible results and to maximize your physical potential after recovery.

Please note that billing for surgical procedures will be submitted to your insurance carrier by more than one party; the physician’s practice for surgical services, Day Kimball Hospital for facility services and North American Partners for Anesthesia (NAPA) for anesthesiology services (if applicable).
